Usefull hints

The bakchich

Carry some very small spare change with you, and do not forget however that those people are poor (average salary of $160/month) and that you represent a foreign country, whose wealth can be provoking. When you refuse, do it with a smile.

To bargain for

To bargain, you must not be in a big rush. It is above all a psychological challenge, with a mixture of humour, gab, patience and coolness.

The souk

It means the market. It is always in the morning.
There are two kinds of souks: the médina and the citizen's commercial centers in the town and the rural market. In the markets, the artisan's products are grouped together in trades.

The climate

It is a custom to say that Morocco is a cold country where the sun is hot. The temperature changes, in the same day, can be enormous.

Food

The bread is a religious symbol. Do not throw it away.
Only eat the food that you can cook, boil or peal. Never drink tap water.
The mint tea (with sugar) is a real institution. If your tea is too hot, never blow on it, but if it is cold, act like it is warm. Never refuse a glass of tea, neither a second one, nor a third one; only after the third, you can be sure of not being impolite.

One last thing: never ask to a Moroccan how his wife is doing, it could shock him.
